Act 3 Scene 1 Plot summary

‘It is morning and Cassio has hired musicians to entertain Othello and Desdemona. Othello does not care much for the music, and sends a clown, or professional jester, to banish the musicians. He does this in an amusing way, providing the only humorous episode in a grim play (if we exclude Cassio’s drunken comments). Iago sends Emilia to Cassio, promising to get Othello out of the way so that they may speak freely. Emilia brings good news: Othello will restore Cassio to his previous position at the earliest opportunity. Cassio should be satisfied with this promise, but instead thinks he will have a better chance if he speaks to Desdemona. He persuades Emilia to arrange a private meeting between Desdemona and himself.’
