‘Iago appears in a different guise, as Othello’s friend, pretending readiness to defend his master’s honour. We know, but Othello does not, that Iago’s account of what Brabantio actually said about Othello is far from the truth. Cassio arrives with an urgent summons from the Venetian Senate concerning the impending war with the Turks. Othello is confronted by Brabantio, Roderigo and their followers. Othello meets Brabantio’s abusive threats with calm self-assurance. Since both men are required on urgent state business, the conflict between them is prevented from developing.’
